Installation Guide

Get Noiseforge Nexus running in your DAW. Pick your operating system below — each path takes about two minutes.

💡 Before you start

Close your DAW before copying files in. Most DAWs only scan plugin folders at launch, so files copied while a DAW is open won't be picked up until you restart it.

Windows VST3 DAWs

Reaper, Cubase, Studio One, FL Studio, Ableton Live, and any DAW that supports VST3.

Step 1 — Download & Extract

  1. Log in to your Noiseforge account and click Download Windows.
  2. Extract the .zip. Inside you'll find a Noiseforge Nexus.vst3 — on Windows this looks like a regular file; on macOS (below) it's a package.

Step 2 — Copy to the VST3 Folder

Move Noiseforge Nexus.vst3 into the standard VST3 location:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3\
💡 Tip

This is the system-wide VST3 path every DAW scans by default. Windows will ask for admin permission to paste here — click Continue. If you prefer a per-user install, use %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Common\VST3\ instead.

Step 3 — Open Your DAW

  1. Launch your DAW (Reaper, Cubase, FL Studio, Studio One, Ableton Live, etc.).
  2. Trigger a plugin rescan if it doesn't appear immediately:
    • Reaper: Options → Preferences → Plug-ins → VST → Re-scan
    • Cubase: Studio → VST Plugin Manager → Rescan All
    • FL Studio: Options → Manage Plugins → Start Scan
    • Studio One: Studio One → Options → Locations → VST Plug-Ins → Rescan
    • Ableton Live: Preferences → Plug-Ins → Rescan
  3. Insert Noiseforge Nexus on the master bus (or any track) to confirm it loaded.
✅ Verify it loaded

If Nexus shows up in your DAW's plugin list, the install worked. Skip straight to License Activation. If it doesn't, head to Troubleshooting.

⚠️ Windows SmartScreen Warning

Noiseforge Nexus is not yet signed with a Microsoft code-signing certificate, so Windows SmartScreen may show a warning when you first extract or load the plugin. This is standard for independent developers — the plugin is safe. Here's how to clear it:

How to bypass SmartScreen

  1. When the "Windows protected your PC" dialog appears, click More info.
  2. Click Run anyway.
  3. If the .zip itself looks "blocked," right-click it → Properties → tick Unblock at the bottom → Apply, then re-extract.

Windows Pro Tools

Pro Tools only loads AAX plugins, so Nexus (VST3) needs a wrapper. BlueCat PatchWork is the most popular and reliable option.

Step 1 — Install Nexus VST3 first

Complete the Windows + VST3 steps above. Nexus needs to be in C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3\ before PatchWork can find it.

Step 2 — Install BlueCat PatchWork (AAX)

  1. Download PatchWork from bluecataudio.com (paid, free trial available).
  2. Install the AAX build and restart Pro Tools.
  3. Insert BlueCat PatchWork on any track.

Step 3 — Load Nexus inside PatchWork

  1. Open the PatchWork interface.
  2. Click an empty slot → Load VST3 Plug-in.
  3. Pick Noiseforge Nexus from the list.
  4. Nexus opens inside PatchWork — use it normally.
💡 Alternatives

DDMF Metaplugin and Element are solid VST3-to-AAX alternatives if PatchWork doesn't suit your workflow.

💡 Pro tip

Save a PatchWork preset with Nexus loaded so you can drop it on any future session in one click.

macOS VST3 & AU DAWs

Reaper, Cubase, Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Studio One, GarageBand, and any DAW that supports VST3 or AU.

Step 1 — Download & Extract

  1. Log in to your Noiseforge account and click Download Mac.
  2. Extract the .zip. You'll get two packages:
    • Noiseforge Nexus.vst3 — VST3 for Reaper, Cubase, Ableton, Studio One, Bitwig, …
    • Noiseforge Nexus.component — AU for Logic Pro, GarageBand, Live (when using AU)
  3. The .vst3 and .component are macOS packages (folders that look like files). Move the whole package — don't open it.

Step 2 — Copy to the Plugin Folders

Pick the format your DAW uses:

VST3 (Reaper, Cubase, Ableton, Studio One, Bitwig, …)

~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/

AU (Logic Pro, GarageBand)

~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/
💡 How to open the Library folder

The ~/Library folder is hidden by default. In Finder: Go (menu bar) → hold Option (⌥) → click Library. Then open Audio → Plug-Ins → VST3 (or Components).

Step 3 — Bypass macOS Gatekeeper

⚠️ "Cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified"

Noiseforge Nexus is not yet notarized with Apple, so Gatekeeper blocks the first launch. The plugin is safe — you just need to tell macOS to trust it. Pick the method that matches your comfort level:

Method 1 — One Terminal command (fastest)

Open Terminal and run:

sudo xattr -rd com.apple.quarantine ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/Noiseforge\ Nexus.vst3 ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/Noiseforge\ Nexus.component

Enter your Mac password when prompted (no characters appear — that's normal). Then restart your DAW.

Method 2 — Click-through in System Settings

  1. Try to load Nexus in your DAW — it'll fail with a warning.
  2. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security and scroll to the bottom.
  3. You'll see "Noiseforge Nexus was blocked" with an Allow Anyway button. Click it (you may need to authenticate).
  4. Go back to your DAW, rescan plugins, and try again.

Step 4 — Open Your DAW

  1. Launch your DAW. If Nexus doesn't show up, trigger a rescan:
    • Reaper: Options → Preferences → Plug-ins → VST → Re-scan
    • Logic Pro: Logic Pro → Settings → Plug-in Manager → Reset & Rescan
    • Cubase: Studio → VST Plugin Manager → Rescan All
    • Ableton Live: Preferences → Plug-Ins → Rescan
    • Studio One: Studio One → Preferences → Locations → Rescan
  2. Insert Noiseforge Nexus on the master bus (or any track) to confirm it loaded.
💡 Logic Pro AU validation

Logic validates every AU plugin at scan time and can be strict on the first try. If Logic refuses to load Nexus after the Gatekeeper bypass, restart your Mac and rescan again — it usually clears on the second pass.

✅ Verify it loaded

If Nexus appears in your DAW's plugin list, you're done. Skip to License Activation. If it doesn't, jump to Troubleshooting.

macOS Pro Tools

Pro Tools on Mac only loads AAX. Wrap Nexus in BlueCat PatchWork to bring it into Pro Tools.

Step 1 — Install Nexus + bypass Gatekeeper first

Complete the Mac + VST3/AU steps above, including the Gatekeeper bypass. Nexus needs to be in ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/ (or Components/) before PatchWork can see it.

Step 2 — Install BlueCat PatchWork (AAX)

  1. Download from bluecataudio.com (paid, free trial available).
  2. Install the AAX build and restart Pro Tools.
  3. Insert BlueCat PatchWork on any track.

Step 3 — Load Nexus inside PatchWork

  1. Open the PatchWork interface.
  2. Click an empty slot → Load VST3 Plug-in (or Load AU Plug-in).
  3. Pick Noiseforge Nexus.
  4. Use Nexus normally inside PatchWork.
💡 Pro tip

Save a PatchWork preset with Nexus loaded so you can drop it on any track in one click.

🔑 License Activation

After installing the plugin, activate it once with your license key.

How to activate

  1. Open Noiseforge Nexus in your DAW — the activation overlay appears.
  2. Log in to your Noiseforge account and copy your Nexus license key from My Account → Licenses.
  3. Paste the key into the plugin's activation field and click Activate.
  4. Nexus verifies online and unlocks immediately.

Important notes

  • You need an internet connection for the first activation.
  • Each license supports up to 2 machines (e.g., desktop + laptop).
  • To move your license to a new machine, deactivate the old one from My Account → Licenses → Activations first.
  • After activation, Nexus works offline — it only checks back in periodically.

🛠 Troubleshooting

Common issues and how to fix them.

Plugin doesn't appear in my DAW

  • Confirm the file is in the correct folder for your OS (see the section above).
  • Trigger a plugin rescan in your DAW's preferences.
  • On Mac, confirm you ran the xattr command to remove quarantine (or clicked Allow Anyway in System Settings).
  • On Windows, confirm you unblocked the file (right-click → Properties → Unblock).
  • Restart your DAW after copying files.

macOS: "Cannot be opened" or "Damaged" error

  • Open Terminal and run:
    sudo xattr -rd com.apple.quarantine ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/Noiseforge\ Nexus.vst3 ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/Noiseforge\ Nexus.component
  • Enter your Mac password when prompted (no characters appear — that's normal).
  • Restart your DAW and rescan.
  • If it still fails: System Settings → Privacy & Security → scroll down → click Allow Anyway.

Windows SmartScreen blocks the file

  • Click More infoRun anyway.
  • Right-click the downloaded .zip → Properties → check Unblock → Apply. Then extract again.

Activation says "Could not connect to license server"

  • Check your internet connection.
  • Make sure your firewall or antivirus is not blocking the plugin from accessing the internet.
  • Try again in a few minutes — the server may be temporarily busy.

"Maximum activations reached"

  • Each license allows 2 activations.
  • Go to your account panel and deactivate a machine you're no longer using.
  • Then activate again on your new machine.

Updating to a new version (important)

  • Do not keep old and new versions with different names in the same folder. Your DAW may still load the old one.
  • Before copying the new update, remove the previous plugin file/folder for that product.

Windows (VST3)

  1. Close your DAW.
  2. Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3\.
  3. Delete the old Noiseforge Nexus.vst3.
  4. Copy the new .vst3 from the latest zip.
  5. Open DAW and run plugin rescan.

macOS (VST3 / AU)

  1. Close your DAW.
  2. Delete old plugin files from ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/ and/or ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/.
  3. Copy the new plugin files.
  4. Run xattr -rd com.apple.quarantine ... again on the new files.
  5. Open DAW and rescan plugins.
